| Description of Garden | Designer: | ||
| The extraordinary 'Grand Descent', a parade of steps leading down from the house through several terraces to the gardens below, dominates the aspect. Off the first terrace are the fine 18th century French Blue Gates and at the foot is the main fountain and formal beds, with loggia beyond. An authentic Swiss Chalet with an alpine rockery, is found near the Witches' Circle, a set of stone basins and a raised flower bed. There is a magnificent conservatory, though only to be admired from the outside. On the other side of the grand descent is a terrace lined with magnificent old chestnuts, some reputed to be 800 years old. An unusual, if not unique, 'hot wall' which was originally intended (though unsuccessfully) to accelerate the growing of fruits is now fully restored. | |||
| History of Garden | |||
| The Hall was designed by James Paine in the 1770's. Gandy Deering designed extensive alterations in the 1840's, while Donald Beaton helped with the garden design. Sir Charles Barry completed the additions to the Hall and assisted the owner, Sir William Middleton and his wife, to re-design the gardens and particularly 'The Grand Descent'. William Robinson was consulted by Lord de Saumarez in the 1880's to re-fashion the gardens to a true flower garden. | |||
