| Description of Garden | Designer:
Dame Sylvia Crowe |
||||||||||||
| Barford Park is noted for its quiet seclusion and the lovely Georgian house with its small-scale but perfect landscaping melding into the surrounding farmland. The park, with its many fine trees, is divided from the gardens by a ha-ha. The terrace and lawns are complemented by a pond with goldfish and there is a woodland and water garden with rhododendrons, azaleas, primulas and gunnera. The walled flower garden can be viewed from the house and is almost an extension of it. | |||||||||||||
| History of Garden | |||||||||||||
| The House was originally a farmhouse with a two-storey Queen Anne front added in 1710. The top storey and wings were added in 1750 and the gardens were laid out at about the same time. The Everard family of Otterhampton owned the estate from the early 19th century until it was sold to the Stancombs, the present owners, in 1956. By then both the house and gardens were in a very bad state, but restoration was begun in 1960 to a design by Dame Sylvia Crowe. | |||||||||||||
