| Description of Garden | Designer:
Mrs. Charles Hornby's grandmother-in-law |
||||||||||||
| There are 8 acres of garden surrounding a converted 15th century columbarium. The garden is intensively planted with many interesting and unusual plants. The terraces, courtyards and gardens are divided into rooms and are either surrounded by stone walls or by hedges. Roses are a Hornby passion and are everywhere underplanted in the spring with tulips and alliums and in the summer with campanulas. There is a formal herbaceous border and water garden and the planted pots around the swimming pool are of particular interest. The planting everywhere reflects a desire to create an informal feeling within a formal framework. It is a garden of great energy and diversity. |

| History of Garden | |||||||||||||
| The house was bought by the present owner, Mrs. Charles Hornby's, grandmother-in-law in 1945 and there was no garden then at all with it. She made the 'bones' of the garden and the Hornbys have been in the house for 30 years and have made many new borders and planted many interesting trees and shrubs. | |||||||||||||
