| Little Sparta is truly a poet's paradise. The garden, created by Dr Ian Hamilton Finlay, combines sensual planting with the enigmatic, in the form of classical allusions, symbols and inscriptions. These features have drawn high praise to the contemporary garden for an originality and uniqueness, which is mirrored in the other works of the artist. |

| History of Garden | ||||||
| Finlay has transformed this farmstead since purchasing it in 1966. He said of its design, "The secret of gardening is composition. I have seen quite a few gardens where people have put in sculptures or artefacts. Mostly I think that they are not very satisfactory because they are interested in artefacts and they don't bother about the plants; they need to think about composition." | ||||||
