Description of Garden

A tunnel of trees leads to steep grassy banks on either side each with a large walled garden and with the 14th century castle perched on the clifftop in the background. The garden designer Xa Tollemache helped to re-create one of the gardens which has a turret with panoramic views of the gardens, castle and sea. A traditional layout of the gardens allows for eight compartments divided by grass paths, with much decorative ironwork to enhance the water feature, laburnum pergola and gazebo.

There are two long fuschia hedges, beautifully trimmed, to provide shelter and define the compartments and parterres containing flowers, fruits and vegetables. Lonicera, escallonia, hydrangea and a variety of roses climb the outer walls with herbaceous borders below.

History Of Garden

The garden was originally laid out by David Bryce during his overall re-modelling of the castle and grounds in the mid-19th century.
