| Description of Garden | Designer:
Jacky Hawthorne |
|||||
| The two acre gardens of Old Thatch, largely derelict until 2000, have been lovingly recreated by Jacky Hawthorne, owner and garden designer. There are different types of gardens which you will discover as you go round - from the Formal Garden, through the Lavender Terrace to the Water Garden and beyond to other gardens including a Cottage Garden and Rose Walk. The gardens range from the formal to informal with some stunning grasses and planting combinations. Despite being relatively new, the gardens reflect the sense of the past, which pervades Old Thatch and makes it such a unique and tranquil setting. Starred garden in the Telegraph's Good Gardens' Guide. | ||||||
| History of Garden | ||||||
| Old Thatch is a grade II listed building dating to the 17'h century and is one of the longest thatched houses in the country. Before becoming a private home at the start of the 19th century, Old Thatch was once a beer house with accommodation rooms and stabling. The dining room beams are made from ships' timbers and the hasps of the original stable doors are still visible. The highwayman Dick Turpin is reputed to have often used Old Thatch as a hideaway and there are even tales of a ghost horse. Old Thatch's most famous resident is Enid Blyton, the children's writer. When she first saw Old Thatch in the 1920s she was captivated by its charm and she used the house and gardens as the inspiration for many of her stories. | ||||||
