History of Garden

The National Trust's only arboretum, Winkworth is a wonderful collection of trees and plants uniquely set in over 100 acres of dramatic Surrey countryside offering stunning views whatever the season.
Created by Dr Wilfrid Fox in the early part of the 20th century the dramatic hillside location provides the perfect "canvas" for what he described as using plants "to paint a picture" The extraordinary planting combinations will immerse you in texture, colour and fragrance that will inspire you.

In the summer ideal for a family day out or picnic. In autumn experience the blaze of stunning foliage. Explore the rich and stark landscape in winter that gives way to brilliant carpets of old English bluebells in spring with impressive displays of azaleas and magnolias.
Featured in many well-known film and TV series, our boathouse is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the impressive lakeside surroundings and observe our abundant variety of wildlife.

We have many exciting events, activities and guided walks throughout the year, suitable for all ages and abilities.
Whether you are researching the many rare and unusual trees and shrubs, having a family day out or simply wanting a quiet walk, there's something here for everyone.
