Designer: Robert Benson Description of Garden: Early 18th century French-style formal gardens almost unique in England with grand vistas and unexpected views, monumental hedges and trees, temples, ornamental ponds and cascades in over 150 acres of grounds. History: Robert Benson built the house and his ideas of garden design were greatly influenced by the magnificent French designers of the 18th century, such as Andre le Notre. The layout of the garden is thought to have been masterminded by Benson himself, while his daughter, Harriet, added many of the follies and temples in the garden and 'Black Fen' (woodland) that we see today.
