The mild climate, shelter belts and high humidity make the garden suitable for the widest range of plants, including some which can only survive in conservatories elsewhere in Britain. In the spring and early summer, wild flowers abound amid the colourful displays of rhododendron, camellia and azalea planted among the collection of tender and exotic plants. The formal terraces and Rill Garden provide summer long interest from half-hardy perennials and unusual climbers, including the Coral Plant (Berberidopsis corallina) and Chilean Mitre Flower (Mitraria coccinea). Paths wind through clumps of bamboo, groves of mimosa, magnolias and other shrubs down to a small sea cove below. Anyone who loves plants will be entranced by this garden. History: Rupert and Lady Dorothy D'Oyly Carte commissioned Oswald Milne, a pupil of Edward Lutyens, to design a house and gardens for them, after they bought the estate in 1924 . The D'Oyly Cartes chose the site for their house and garden after seeing it from the sea while sailing their yacht between Brixham and Dartmouth. They were both enthusiastic gardeners and experimented with trees and shrubs from around the world, a tradition which the Trust continues.
