Designer: Description of Garden: The garden is just over 1/4 acre lying beside the Kings Cross - Cambridge railway line, and features a very wide range of plants - rare and old favourites crammed into box edged beds. There are various ponds full of water plants and wild life. There is an Alpine house - mostly Auriculas and Lewisias - which are at their best in April. Two heated greenhouses feature mainly orchids and tender bulbs. The garden soil is alkaline but there is a large acid bed, housing many winter-flowering camellia sasanqua, and also rhododendrons. Five seats are scattered round the garden, making it suitable for people not able to walk far at a time. The six raised beds are full of alpines. A cider mill in front of the garden is filled with water in the summer and pots of plants in winter. History: This is a Level-Crossing house, built around 1850 as a bungalow, with the upper storey added about 1900. The owners have been there since 1959 and were able to buy the property when the crossing was made automatic. Local Inns: The Plough, Shepreth The Chequers, Fowlmere.
