Designer: Gordon Long and Malcolm Hockham Description of Garden: There are four acres of garden within a high wall which formed the original kitchen gardens of Eggleston Hall. There has been a house on the site for almost 400 years. Old diaries record crops of apples, pears, cherries, plums, apricots, walnuts, gooseberries, strawberries, artichokes and other vegetables. Many of these are still cultivated today using traditional organic methods and may be bought from the gardens when in season. The ornamental gardens are laid out informally and provide many delights and surprises for enthusiasts and specialists as pleasure for those on a family day out. A moorland stream runs through the gardens and there are many rare herbaceous plants and shrubs to be seen. A replanting programme is underway to build and improve upon this wonderful legacy, and planting suggestions are always welcome.
