Features: Designer: Arabella Lennox-Boyd Description of Garden: The garden is one of the largest in the North West and has been extensively re-landscaped and planted by the Lennox-Boyds over the last 20 years. It lies on both sides of the Artle Beck, a tributary of the Lune. It includes Herbaceous borders, Terraces, a Rose Collection, a Water Garden, the Lilac walk, an Orchard, a Nuttery, the Ornamental kitchen garden, Greenhouses and the Rhododendron collection. In all, there are several thousand plants and trees. History: There has been a Pele Tower on this site for many years. It may have been built as early as 1330 by the Curwen family. The house has been altered subsequently several times. The bay window overlooking the river terrace was probably built in the eighteenth century by the Rawlinsons, but the major change was made by Thomas Edmondson in 1805 - 1810 when the building was enlarged and given its present landscape in the romantic style. Many of the fine trees were planted by his descendants through whom the property passed, until the Boyds purchased it in 1978.
