Yorkshire Planetarium star shows Designer: 'Capability' Brown Description of Garden: The gardens at Harewood are amongst the most beautiful in the country. Plants from all over the world thrive in this wonderful historic setting. The gardens cover over 140 acres and are situated within 1,000 acres of ornamental parkland set out in the 18th century by 'Capability' Brown. The parkland is a stunning example of the traditional English landscape with characteristic arrangements of native trees and gently sweeping hillsides surrounding an extensive serpentine lake. The Terrace is an elaborate, Italian-style garden, with statuesque fountains and intricate symmetrical flower beds edged by over a mile of box hedging and planted with seasonal displays of bulbs and bedding plants. In contrast, below the Terrace, is the Archery Border, an exotic mixture of richly coloured flowers and architectural foliage creating a sumptuous sub-tropical display. There is a very enjoyable walk around the 'Capability' Brown lake which is surrounded by charming woodlands dappled with shade from mature trees. Here, in early summer, Harewood's collection of rhododendrons provide a stunning display of colour. Finally at the head of the lake is a 20 foot cascade which tumbles into a sunken glade - a plantsman's paradise full of Himalayan plants, ferns and bamboos creating a rich, botanic environment. History: After finishing the house in the grand fashion, the first Lord Harewood brought in 'Capability' Brown to level the old house at Gawthorpe and landscape the estate. This he proceeded to do in his ususla expansive sweeping style, creating an open vista of parkland dotted with carefully placed trees and paths to accentuate specific views. On Brown's suggestion a stream was dammed to create a large lake. The dam itself, now a considerable waterfall, dominates the rocky Himalayan garden resulting from the family's trips to the region. The walled garden nearby has been providing fruits and vegetables for the House's table for over two hundred years. The 3rd Earl of Harewood commissioned Sir Charles Barry to create the Italianate parterre in the 1840's.
