Designer: Description of Garden: The gardens are located in the glorious grounds of Holehird Mansion, a Grade II listed building near to Windermere in the north-west of England. The Lakeland Horticultural Society occupies all of the formal gardens around the house, including the Victorian walled garden, a total of about ten acres. The elevated site, on a hillside at the southern end of the Troutbeck valley near Windermere village, enjoys a spectacular panorama of views across the lake to the fells beyond. The gardens are reputed to be among the finest in England and were shown on BBC Gardeners' World in 2002 as one of the Nation's Favourite Gardens. They are unique in being maintained entirely by volunteers and supported by voluntary donations. History: The Lakeland Horticultural Society (LHS) is a registered charity founded in 1969 to "promote and develop the science, practice and art of horticulture, particularly with regard to conditions prevailing in the Lake District".
