Designer: Mr & Mrs John Phillips Description of Garden: This garden has a 6 acre plateau, high Downs to north, and a distant view to the south west of Alfred's Tower at Stourhead which can be seen on a clear day. Herbaceous borders, a white and pastel garden, as well as an old rose garden and shrub & tree walks are prominent features. There are three water gardens, 90 feet below the main level, each leading into another, together with a very small lake and an extensive range of wet-growing plants and primulas. Also there are gunneras, rodgersias, bamboos and a number of tree species including metasequoia and a Chinese tulip tree. 33 acres of woodland offer bluebells in late April, and a large number of erythroniums (dog tooth violets) around the oaks in the same season make for tranquil walks. The garden and woodland form, in effect, an arboretum in which a wide range of species and hybrid trees from around the world may be seen in various stages of maturity. History: Designed by present owners, constructed from ancient mixed woodland; being the amenity woodland of the Roundway Estate, over the last 42 years.
