Designer: Description of Garden: This Victorian Pleasure Garden was built to "enlighten and educate" by the well-known philanthropist, Augustus Henry Pitt-Rivers in 1880. The Dell Garden contains acid-loving plants, crinodendron, eucryphias, camillias, rhododendrons and hydrangeas. "Quarters" was originally built for picnicking, but now contains beautiful shrub beds with thatched arbors. The main lawn is surrounded by unusual buildings of Indian origin, plus an open-air theatre and a temple. History: General Pitt-Rivers inherited the Rushmore Estate in 1880 and created a Victorian "leisure park" consisting of a race course, a museum for his archaeological collection (now at Oxford), an art gallery, golf links and the Larmer Tree Gardens, as he called them. Today the Gardens are all that remain, although a new golf course has recently been created. The Larmer Tree once represented an ancient boundary between Dorset and Wiltshire and tradition states King John (1189-1216) hunted in this area many times and met with his huntsmen under the branches of the Larmer Tree.
