Designer: Description of Garden: This complete 5 acre garden was designed by Jekyll in 1908 for Charles Holme, founder of the important Arts and Crafts magazine "The Studio". Copies of her plans are on display. A formal garden holds typical Jekyll herbaceous borders. A rose lawn, which is surrounded by planted drystone walls, leads down shallow steps to Bowling and Tennis Lawns. The whole is enclose in yew hedging. By contrast, in the wild garden, grass paths lead from circular grass steps through rambling roses, shrubs and walnut trees to a spring-fed pond. An orchard, nuttery and kitchen garden lie alongside the garden. The website shows dramatic photographs of the dereliction in 1984 and today's restored glory. www.gertrudejekyllgarden.co.uk History: Designed by Jekyll in 1908, the house by Ernest Newton (founder member of the Art Workers Guild). Then Charles Holme, the founder (in 1893) and sometime editor of The Studio, the most important Arts & Crafts magazine of its time, took over the property in 1902 until the 1920's. Restored by Mrs. Ros Wallinger. Local Inns: Hoddington Arms, Upton Grey Sun, Bentworth Chequers Inn, Well Accomodation: The Hatchings, Cliddesden, Basingstoke. Restaurants: Village/Town/Sightseeing:
