The axis consists of double herbaceous borders with double yew hedges and a broad grass walk down the middle. Off it are compartmented 'rooms' of formal design, each filled with plants planned to be at their best for different seasons. They include a Rose garden, Tropical garden, Sylvia's garden, White garden, Water garden, Autumn garden and Orchard garden, amongst others. Truly a garden for all seasons. History: Newby Hall was built between 1685-1695. Soon afterwards, the owner, Sir Edward Blackett, employed Peter Aram as Head Gardener and, guided by London & Wise, he laid out the formal gardens and avenues in the style of the period. This design was superseded by that of Major Edward Compton in 1921, influenced by Lawrence Johnston's Hidcote Manor. The Major died in 1977 leaving much repair to be done to his grand plan. Fortunately his son, Robin Compton, rose to the challenge and has renovated and replanted the garden.
