The main views from the garden can be found stretching out from the pinetum and towering Lime Avenue and look out over the 600 acre estate of Nymans Woods. A more sheltered garden walk is provided by the elegant Laurel Walk which leads past the entrance to the original house, now sadly standing only as a romantic ruin after a devastating fire in 1947. The Rose and Heather Gardens and Pergola are all striking features of the skilful and dramatic planting of the garden team at Nymans. The jostling colours and fragrance of the summer borders lead the garden through the spring into summer and the incredible display continues through autumn with the remarkable range of coloured foliage in the trees. Part of the old house which was saved after the 1947 fire is open to the public and gives an insight into the lives of the Messel family, who crafted the garden for over half a century. History: The framework of the garden was set out by Ludwig Messel in 1890 when the estate was first built upon and the first house constructed. It was developed by Leonard and Maud Messel who introduced rare magnolias and exotic plants over the years until the garden passed to the National Trust in 1953.
