Description of Garden:
The Pleasure Ground is a woodland garden covering 30 acres set in 700 acres of parkland . It incorporates styles from the 16th, 18th and 20th century. A plantation of trees was laid out as the Wizard Earl's Birchen Walks; the temple and rotunda was sited by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown and there have been more recent plantings of specimen trees and shrubs. Winding paths meander among mature and juvenile woodland which in Spring is transformed by an amazing display of daffodils, bluebells and blossom. Wild flower meadows team with Wood Anemones, fritillaries and orchids and the Autumn colour, courtesy of plant material specifically chosen for optimum effect, make the pleasure ground a garden with interest virtually all year round.


History: 
The garden was originally created by 9th Earl of Northumberland - the Wizard Earl, in 1585. He also made the Birchen Walks. Between 1688-93 George London worked on the design of the garden and this was further adapted by 'Capability' Brown between 1751-64.
