Potager, box garden, arboretum and wild flower meadow, wild flower meadow and dewpond. Designer: Mr. & Mrs. Antony Young Description of Garden: An informal garden on a south-facing gentle slope. Sweeping lawns and mixed borders with a wealth of interesting shrubs, old roses including tree ramblers, magnolias, acers, lividendrons, to name but a few. Potager, box garden, arboretum and 3-acre wild flower meadow to add diversity to the overall experience, with mown rides through the arboretum and meadow. The mood of this garden is one of understated calm and peace. The planting relies heavily on structure, texture and contrasting shades. Whenever possible, sweet-smelling flowers are chosen and even in january the scent of Daphne bholud will be met on the breeze in two or three different parts of the garden. Lots of box and yew hedging with hornbeam and beech willows have grown quickly. History: The garden has been entirely created by the present owners since their arrival in 1968. It has been developed and enlarged in stages, with the planting of the arboretum from 1989 onwards and the 3-acre wild flower meadow in 1996. In excess of 4,000 trees have been planted over the years, many now reaching early maturity. Three iron rose arches have been constructed, since the mid-1980s and in 2008 an iron arbour was added on the lawn above the principal arch.
