Features: Cotswold manor house with eclectic collection and Arts & Crafts-style garden; Collection of craftsmanship and design from across the globe; The home of the life's work of eccentric architect, artist and craftsman Charles Paget Wade; Traditional golden-yellow Cotswold Manor house set in a delightful village above the Vale of Evesham; Terraced hillside garden designed as a series of rooms and run on organic principles Designer: Charles Wade and M. H. Baillie-Scott Description of Garden: An extraordinary, even unique, house and garden expressing the philosophy of Charles Wade and the Arts & Crafts movement even down to the exact shade of dark blue he favoured for the garden furniture to blend and contrast with the greens of the garden and mellow tones of the Cotswold stone. You will not find any orange coloured plants here. The garden is in a series of 'outdoor rooms', but according to Wade, the architect, it is an extension of the house and contains a variety of architectural objects all carefully designed to blend with, and enhance the effect. In the wider scene the garden fits well into the Cotswold landscape, views of which from many parts of the garden cleverly counterbalance the enclosed effect of the compartments. History: Charles Wade bought Snowshill Manor in 1919 as an ideal base in the favoured Cotswolds to demonstrate his passion for the Arts & Crafts philosophy. He was an architect, artist and woodworker and transformed both the Manor and the garden he created there into an extraordinary expression of his ideals. Wade commissioned a design by M. H. Baillie-Scott and created a series of 'rooms' in the style of Hidcote. Following its acquisition of the property, the National Trust has maintained the house and garden in its original style, even using organic principles in the garden.
