Fine statuary and original Victorian garden features. Victorian ridge & furrow glasshouses by Paxton.Walled garden, Winter garden/ orangery and magnificent specimen trees. National Collection: Garden Designer: Description of Garden: Sweeping lawns and formal gardens combine with majestic statuary and ornamentation, whilst great beauty and a sense of depth are given by elegant yew hedges, topiary and the many mature trees from around the world. The present sunken garden was once the site of a grand glass-domed Winter Garden, and the Walled Garden, now planted with a variety of fruit trees and two huge herbaceous borders, dominates the gardens' northern end. One of the most popular features has been the Yew hedge Maze, designed by William Nesfield and planted in 1846, it is still one of the finest in Britain. It covers approximately one acre of the gardens, and at the centre stands an enchanting small pagoda perched on a grassy mound. Garden History: Somerleyton Hall is the family home of Hon. Hugh & Lara Crossley, and has been in their family since 1863 when Lord Somerleyton's great-grandfather, carpet manufacturer Sir Francis Crossley Bt, purchased the hall from Sir Morton Peto. The 12 acre gardens and grounds at Somerleyton Hall have long been considered of first-rate importance, with many magnificent specimen trees, shrubs, borders and plants providing colour and interest throughout the year. The gardens were laid out at the same time as the Hall was re-built (1844-51) by Sir Morton Peto and retain much of their original Victorian appearance.
