Designer: Description of Garden: A fascinating romantic 4 1/2 acre plantsman's garden where grass paths lead through unique Daffodils, Camellias, scented Azaleas and Magnolias. Visitors will walk under Kiwi laden trees, down delphinium and rose-covered walks, or by pitcher plant lily ponds. There are majestically hedged borders which host dragonflies, butterflies, and birds. There is a ferny secret garden and woodland area with camellias, scented azaleas and blue hydrangeas. The walking is level and there are plenty of seats tempting the visitor to linger and admire the scenery. History: Stourton Rectory was bought by Anthony and Elizabeth Bullivant and renamed Stourton House. The derelict garden had little to offer except some fine trees, Rhododendrons and blue Hydrangeas. When a huge beech tree blew down the root hole was lined with 30 tons of clay to form a pond and part of the paddock made into a new garden. Two old tennis courts, then a chicken pen were cleared and in 1968 a quick growing hedge was planted by Anthony round them and eight borders were designed and planted by Elizabeth. The hedge was trimmed at 4ft and when 12ft shaped by George Bullivant to Anthony's design and clipped and developed over the years by Paul Russell into a magnificent feature. Many converted disasters make a unique and fascinating all season garden.
