Designer: Sir Reginald Blomfield in 1921 Description of Garden: The lovely gardens include herbaceous borders, an Elizabethan knot garden with traditional herbs and an orchard, underplanted with thousands of daffodils. Lawns, yew hedges and topiary complete the gardens. Herbs and unusual perennials are sold in the Courtyard from Easter to September. A significant reason for visitors to tour this house and garden is for its connections with the family of George Washington. Location of Herb Society Garden. History: This is a modest garden designed to be a setting for the Tudor house which was built in 1539, by Lawrence Washington on land purchased from Henry VIII. His descendants lived there for 120 years and in 1656 his great, great grandson, Colonel John Washington, left England to take up land in Virginia and created what later became Mount Vernon. Col. Washington was the great grandfather of George Washington, first President of the United Sates of America. In 1914 Sulgrave Manor was presented by a body of subscribers to the Peoples of Great Britain and the United States in celebration of 100 years of peace between the nations. In 1924 the National Society of Colonial Dames of America generously endowed the house and still co-operates in its upkeep.
